Home bred horses
Windsor Farms historically kept a few horses to race. Often they will be fillies who might make good brood mare prospects. A colt
was kept if circumstances prevent his sale prior to racing age. Planned
development on the New Mexico farm includes setting up a multiple mile long
"gallop" for use in training. Thus we will keep and train many of the
horses we breed. This will provide increasing opportunities for partnerships.
Our goal is to breed top quality race horses, and we would like to prove that a
true Classic contender can be bred and raised in New Mexico!
Windsor Farms has been racing in California, and all home breds were registered
Cal-Breds and thus eligible for the Cal-Bred bonus purse money. Future
horses bred by Windsor Farms will be registered New Mexico breds to take
advantage of the lucrative New Mexico breeding program.
These partnerships can include future breeding rights or not, depending on
the particular horse. Buy in costs are based on the pro-rated value of the
horse plus estimated expenses for 6 months, to a year, depending on the age and
training level of the horse.
Claiming Mares
Additional mares are sometimes claimed and raced prior to being retired for
breeding. Limited opportunities are available to participate in a claiming
partnerships. Most of the time, these partnerships would be formed for the
racing career only, and would end when the mare is retired from racing.
There would be no acquisition cost to the limited partners, and no buyout upon
retirement. If the horse was claimed away, any amount above the
acquisition cost would be split between the partners. Of course expenses
and purses would be split according to ownership share. This can be a cost
effective way to experience Thoroughbred ownership since the initial expenses
are low.
